WHY WE'RE DEFENDING COUNTRY
Leigh Creek and Copley sits in the world renowned Northern Flinders in South Australia on Adnya-mathanha Country. Leigh Creek and Copley are spe- cial, unique and a place that many call home.
Leigh Creek Energy (LCK) have constructed a UCG (Underground Coal Gasification) demonstration plant near the towns of Leigh Creek and Copley.
In September 2018, the SA Energy and Mining Minister gave the project its final approval, and LCK has commenced its trial. After suspending the trial due to difficulties with ignition and receiving an exten- sion, the trial is due to end mid May and the company is likely to apply to go into full production of this dangerous project.
The community are clearly saying no with over 90% saying they don’t want UCG.
The Leigh Creek coalfield has suffered enough damage and now is the time to let the land heal. This
UCG pilot process has distressed the elders, who are sad, angry and afraid about what Leigh Creek Energy are doing and propose to do further. They are feeling ignored and disrespected once again.
We call on the State Government to abandon any and all plans to approve Leigh Creek Energy pilot project for commercial production.
